Methods of Madness

A Festival Based on Select Films by David Fincher

OBJECTIVE

Select a film director and develop a film festival based on their body of work. Discover and identify a recurring theme that threads through the director's films. Create an aesthetic that conveys the theme through a robust set of deliverables, including a catalog book, marketing materials, environmental design, as well as other products and promotional pieces. Although materials will encompass a wide palette of formats, they must function together as one coherent system.

APPROACH

The director I selected for this project was David Fincher, who is known for his dark and edgy aesthetic. A common theme that I found within his films was that through calculated planning, people have the power to manipulate their victims. However, as organized as the plan might be, the end result is always chaotic. The visual system I developed uses a combination of calculated and chaotic elements, such as tick marks and scratches, to convey that theme throughout the set of deliverables.
